The Republic of Cyprus is continuously examining any information related to the Middle East crisis and the attacks at Akrotiri, government sources said. Among the material under review is a video circulating on social media, reportedly showing an Iranian military officer expressing intent to target US assets in Cyprus.
Video analysed for authenticity
Investigations indicate the video appears to have been created on 28 February. Authorities are also analysing the precise content of the message conveyed in the footage to assess potential threats.
International coordination
Cyprus has reached out to other countries, both EU members and non-members, seeking support similar to that provided by Greece. Contacts have been made with EU institutions, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, as well as with French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
The engagement aims to reinforce Cyprus’ security posture amid heightened regional tensions.
Increased security measures
Government sources confirmed that critical infrastructure in Cyprus is under heightened daily protection. These measures are intended to prevent any incidents linked to the broader Middle East crisis.
Diplomatic visits
On Tuesday, the US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie Davis, is expected to arrive for a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides.
President Christodoulides will also meet Greece’s Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, who is scheduled to arrive in Cyprus the same day, to discuss joint security coordination.
