Cyprus foot-and-mouth disease cases rise to 75

Date:

New infections confirmed in Nicosia and Larnaca

The number of infected livestock units with foot and mouth disease in Cyprus has risen to 75 in affected farming areas of Nicosia and Larnaca, according to an update from the Veterinary Services on Tuesday.

Laboratory tests confirmed four additional positive cases in goat and sheep units in Geri and one infected cattle unit in Dromolaxia–Meneou.

Authorities said sampling, tracing, and laboratory testing are continuing.

Majority of cases in Larnaca region

Out of the 75 infected units linked to the foot and mouth disease outbreak, 15 are located in Nicosia and 60 in Larnaca, all within designated restricted zones.

Veterinary Services stressed that monitoring operations remain ongoing as part of containment efforts.

Vaccination programme progressing

The second phase of the vaccination programme for cattle has reached 71%, while 50.5% of goats and sheep have been vaccinated.

In the pig farming sector, vaccinations have covered 84% of units within the affected areas.

Authorities say efforts are continuing to increase coverage and limit further spread.

Access issues in Pergamos area

Veterinary Services also reported difficulties in carrying out vaccinations in livestock units in Pergamos.

Although farmers have reportedly agreed to the process and are awaiting private veterinarians, access is being obstructed by the Turkish military, according to the statement.

The matter is being handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with the United Nations.

Ongoing containment efforts

Officials continue to prioritise containment measures, including surveillance, vaccination, and restriction zones, as the Cyprus livestock disease situation develops.
