Cyprus flu deaths rise to 13 amid peak of epidemic

Date:

Elderly most affected, younger patients also impacted

Cyprus has reported 13 deaths of hospitalized patients with laboratory-confirmed influenza since the start of the 2026 flu season.

Most fatalities involve elderly patients over 80 with multiple health conditions, but the recent death of a 54-year-old man highlights that younger adults are also at risk.

Epidemic peaks, hospitals under pressure

Health authorities indicate the flu outbreak has likely reached its peak, with early signs of decline in new cases. Hospitals face pressure due to respiratory infections, but the system remains manageable. Officials confirmed adequate supplies of antiviral drugs and diagnostic tests.

Vaccination and prevention remain crucial

Over 145,000 flu vaccine doses have already been administered from 160,000 available, showing strong public response. Citizens, particularly older adults, are urged to get vaccinated, practice good hand hygiene, wear masks in crowded areas, and avoid contact with sick individuals. The flu vaccine this year is estimated to be over 55% effective against circulating strains.
