Christodoulides highlights progress and priorities

The Cyprus EU presidency remains on track despite the ongoing crisis in the Middle East, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Tuesday, stressing that developments in the region have reinforced the government’s strategic priorities.

Speaking during a visit to Ayia Napa Marina, where preparations are underway for the upcoming informal European Council, Christodoulides said the Cyprus EU presidency is delivering “very important results” in its first quarter.

He noted that the government’s goal of promoting a more autonomous European Union has been validated by recent geopolitical developments.

Informal European Council preparations underway

The President toured the facilities that will host the informal European Council meeting scheduled for April 23–24 in Cyprus, describing it as one of the most significant events of the presidency.

“All ministries are working towards the success of this meeting,” he said, adding that multiple bilateral meetings are also expected to take place alongside the summit.

Christodoulides confirmed that the President of the European Commission will visit Cyprus for the event and will also attend the inauguration of a regional firefighting centre.

Positive first-quarter results

Referring to a recent briefing at the Cabinet, the President said the results of the Cyprus EU presidency so far have been positive and aligned with the broader goal of European integration.

“I am proud of what we have achieved in this first quarter,” he said, adding that Cyprus has contributed to the adoption of significant EU legislation.

Crisis reinforces strategic direction

Christodoulides emphasised that the Middle East crisis has not derailed planning but instead confirmed the correctness of Cyprus’ approach.

“All presidencies face challenges. In our case, the crisis in our region has confirmed many of the goals we had set,” he said.

He reiterated that the government remains committed to advancing its agenda and ensuring a successful Cyprus EU presidency, contributing to a more independent and resilient European Union.
