Cyprus defence readiness remains high

Date:

No immediate threat to Cyprus

Cyprus defence readiness remains at a high level despite tensions in the wider region, according to Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas.

Speaking to state radio, Palmas said there is no immediate threat against the Republic of Cyprus, even though developments in the region remain closely monitored.

He noted that the threats recorded so far have been directed at the British bases on the island, while clarifying that the bases are located within the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.

National Guard on high operational alert

The minister stressed that the National Guard is operating at a high level of operational readiness.

He added that Cyprus has the means, if necessary, to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, underlining the country’s preparedness amid the evolving regional situation.

The statement comes as Cyprus defence readiness continues to be a key focus due to instability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Support from allies

Palmas also thanked Greece and France for their immediate response and for sending military assets, describing the move as an act of solidarity between friendly and allied countries.

He added that there is also an intention from other European countries to provide support.

Infrastructure upgrades continue

Responding to questions, the defence minister said that upgrade works at Andreas Papandreou Air Base and Evangelos Florakis Naval Base are continuing normally.

He described the facilities as important infrastructure supporting Cyprus’s strategic role in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Call for calm and caution over misinformation

Palmas concluded by urging citizens to remain calm and to be cautious about misinformation circulating during periods of regional tension.
