Cyprus commited to combat violence against women in UN GA

Date:

Cyprus’ commitment to combating violence against women and girls (VAWG), condemning all forms of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), both online and offline, during peacetime and in conflict was pointed out  by Permanent Represantative to the UN, Ambassador Maria Michail during the 79th United Nations General Assembly high level meeting for the commemorating of the 25th Anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

“Cyprus fully aligns with the statement delivered by the European Union. We strongly condemn sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in all its forms and manifestations; online and offline; in public and private spheres, in peacetime as well as in crisis and conflict. SGBV is a major violation of human rights and an impediment for the full realization of gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, deeply rooted in stereotyped gender roles and historic inequalities,” she stressed.

Ambassador Michail outlined Cyprus’ comprehensive measures, including a National Strategy and Action Plan for 2023–2028 and the 2021 Law on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women, which places an emphasis on gender inequality as a core issue. She underscored the gravity of femicide, noting its prevalence worldwide, with one woman or girl killed every 10 minutes by a partner or family member in 2023.

Cyprus, she noted, became a European pioneer in 2022 by legally defining femicide as a distinct crime within its Criminal Code, urging other states to follow suit.

“As a newly elected member to the Human Rights Council, Cyprus has set as a priority the elimination of violence against women and girls,” Michail added.

“As we approach the 30th anniversary since the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and the Platform of Action, it is more crucial than ever to reflect on its principles, assess our progress and our shared commitments,” she concluded.
