Agreement announced at EGYPES 2026 in Cairo
Cyprus and Egypt signed a framework agreement on Monday during the EGYPES 2026 Conference in Cairo. The agreement covers the development of gas fields in the Cypriot Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), including the Kronos and Aphrodite fields.
The signing was attended by Cyprus Energy Minister, Egypt Energy Minister, President Nikos Christodoulides, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi.
Joint committee to manage gas sales
Under the agreement, the two countries will establish a joint committee to negotiate the sale of Cypriot natural gas to Egypt or its state-owned companies. The aim is to ensure optimal utilization of Cypriot hydrocarbons, including supporting Egypt’s energy needs.
Non-binding agreement to boost cooperation
According to the official statement, the non-binding framework agreement intends to maximize cooperation between the two states in the hydrocarbon sector. The agreement sets the stage for further negotiations on exploitation and commercialisation of Cyprus’ gas reserves.
The collaboration highlights Cyprus’ ongoing efforts to develop its energy resources while strengthening regional partnerships in the Eastern Mediterranean.
