Cypriot diaspora honours were presented on Wednesday evening by President Nikos Christodoulides at a reception held at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.
Eight distinguished members of the Cypriot diaspora received awards for their lifelong contributions to their communities abroad and to Cyprus. The President expressed his deep gratitude, pledging to continue efforts for the liberation and reunification of the island.
“We bestow the highest honour on our compatriots, who stood out for their virtue, dedication and lasting contribution to the common good,” Christodoulides said.
In his address, the President noted that the 1974 Turkish invasion and ongoing occupation marked the lives of all Cypriots, forcing many to leave their homeland. He emphasised that the government will pursue with determination the goal of reunification, fulfilling its historic duty.
The Cypriot diaspora honours were awarded to Andreas Kyprianides, Nikos Tziasas, George Giakoumis, Kyriakos Akathiotis, Athena Charalambidou, Nestor Nestoros, Andreas Savvas Demetriou, and the late Christina Charalambous.
Their contributions span education, sport, community leadership and cultural preservation in countries including the US, UK, Canada, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Australia.
President Christodoulides underlined that the work of the diaspora will always be remembered with gratitude by the Cypriot state and people.
