Since Wednesday morning (April 1), African dust has covered nearly the entire island of Crete, creating an almost lunar landscape with vivid orange skies. The dust has significantly worsened air quality and reduced visibility across the region.
Strong winds intensify the phenomenon
Gale-force winds reaching eight to nine Beaufort have intensified the dust storm, causing turbulent seas and high waves along coastal areas. Authorities warn that these conditions make travel and outdoor activity hazardous.
Emergency response and safety measures
The Civil Protection Authority of Crete updated the Extreme Weather Bulletin from the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (ERMINIO), which predicts heavy rain, thunderstorms, possible hail, and strong winds from Wednesday, April 1, to Thursday, April 2, 2026.
All Civil Protection services have been placed on high alert, with an Orange Warning in effect for Wednesday and a Red Warning for Thursday. Citizens are urged to stay cautious, follow official guidance, and avoid areas affected by severe weather.
