Conference: Health without discrimination for LGBTIQ+ individuals

The consortium of the European Programme Safe‑R (Safeguarding LGBTIQ+ People’s Right to Health) is organizing the conference “Health Without Discrimination: The Right to Health of LGBTIQ+ Individuals”, under the auspices of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 29 April, at the Journalists’ House in Nicosia, from 08:30 to 13:30.

The aim of the conference is to present the results of the Safe‑R programme and to strengthen the dialogue on equal access of LGBTIQ+ individuals to health services. Representatives of public authorities, civil society organisations, academics, and healthcare professionals will participate.

The conference will open with a welcome address by Maria Epaminonda (CFPA), followed by greetings from a representative of the Minister of Health, the Commissioner for the Citizen, and the Patient’s Advocate. The Local Framework of Rights for LGBTIQ+ individuals will be presented by Dr. Nayia Kamenou, and the Safe‑R project will be introduced by the project partners.

Particular emphasis will be given to the presentation of the research “Understanding the Needs of LGBTIQ+ Individuals in Accessing Treatment and Healthcare Services”, which will be delivered by Christina Kokkalou (ΙMR/University of Nicosia).

The conference programme will conclude with a round-table discussion, moderated by Christos Krasidis, President of the AIDS Solidarity Movement. Participants will include representatives from the following entities:  Health Insurance Organisation, Federation of Patient Associations of Cyprus, Cyprus Medical Association, Cyprus Nurses and Midwives Association, and Accept LGBTI Cyprus.

The venue is fully accessible, and interpretation will be provided in Greek, English, Turkish, and in the Cypriot Sign Language. The conference will also be streamed live on the programme’s YouTube channel.

The programme is coordinated by Cyprus Family Planning Association (CFPA), in partnership with: University of Nicosia Research Foundation, AIDS Solidarity Movement, Accept LGBTI Cyprus, and DIAS Publishing House.
The project is funded by the European Commission’s Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values Programme (CERV), CERV‑2023‑EQUAL.
