Concerns raised over government suspension of blind allowance

Government halts blind allowance applications

The Pancyprian Organization of the Blind (POB) has raised concerns over the government’s suspension of the blind allowance, which began last September. New applications for the €382 monthly benefit have been halted, leaving recent cases in limbo. The organisation reports that 15 blind citizens have already been deprived of the allowance, a support in place since 1996.

Short-term savings vs long-term impact

The POB criticised the move, noting that the government aims to save €8 million short-term to fund other benefits, including for those without severe disabilities. However, this policy is expected to gradually reduce the 2,050 beneficiaries, effectively erasing support for blind citizens.

Rising living costs exacerbate hardship

The association highlighted that, amid soaring living costs, blind citizens also lose access to a 19% electricity discount, in violation of EU regulations. The suspension threatens to return the community to the pre-1990s conditions of poverty and exclusion, before targeted allowances were introduced.

Call for parliamentary action

The POB warned that the new legislation discriminates against blind citizens and urged the House of Representatives to consider the consequences for the 2,050 affected individuals and reject the law. The organisation is planning a demonstration outside the Presidential Palace to advocate for equality and dignity for blind citizens.
