The protection of competition remains a key condition for a sustainable electricity market, the Electricity Market Association (EMA) said, commenting on the ongoing parliamentary debate over a bill that would allow Cyta to expand its activities into the energy sector.
In a press release, the Association stressed that the Competitive Electricity Market still operates at an early stage. Authorities must therefore assess any legislative or regulatory intervention with particular care.
Fair competition and market stability
The EMA said policymakers must prioritise the smooth operation of the market, the protection of fair and undistorted competition, equal treatment of all participants, and the long-term sustainability of the energy sector for the benefit of consumers and the wider economy.
While broader participation and stronger competition can reduce costs and improve services, the Association noted that these benefits depend on a stable, transparent and level regulatory framework for all market players.
Concerns over regulatory balance
The EMA also warned against measures that could create unequal competitive starting conditions, even unintentionally. Such imbalances could reshape the structure of the electricity market and limit genuine consumer choice over time.
Within this context, the Association pointed out that Parliament discussed the bill without a prior public consultation. Issues that directly affect market structure, competition conditions and sector governance require meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders to ensure balanced and evidence-based decisions.
Call for structured dialogue
Concluding, the Electricity Market Association said it stands ready to contribute responsible, well-documented positions to a substantive discussion on the future of the electricity market.
Its stated aim remains the safeguarding of a healthy, sustainable and competitive market that serves the public interest and delivers clear benefits for consumers.
