Date:

Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panayiotou, confirmed Nicosia’s commitment to implementing decisive actions against the climate crisis, during the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry, in the context of the Conference, Panayiotou participated in EU Ministers working groups “contributing to the formulation of common EU positions on climate policy”. “UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, also participated in one of these groups, highlighting the importance of collective action”, it said.

Panayiotou, the press release said, conveyed the positions of the Republic of Cyprus, reaffirming Cyprus’ commitment to implementing decisive actions against the climate crisis.

“She referred to the importance of cooperation to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and underlined the urgent need for a coordinated international approach that will strengthen the resilience of societies to the impact of climate change”, it added.

At the same time, it said, she highlighted Cyprus’ initiatives to promote sustainability at regional level.

The Ministry said that, following intensive consultations, an agreement was reached in Baku early Sunday morning for more funding for the effort to mitigate climate crisis, which lays the foundation for the establishment of a new collective quantified financing target of 300 billion USD to support developing countries. This funding is linked with the strengthening of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

In addition, it was decided to strengthen adaptation strategies for climate change with an emphasis on the protection from irreversible climate impacts.
