Tension flared on Tuesday night outside the Israeli Embassy in Athens, where riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse pro-Palestinian demonstrators.
The confrontation took place on Panormou Street, near the junction with Kifisias Avenue, shortly after a protest march in solidarity with Palestine reached the embassy. The march had begun earlier at Eleftherias Park and proceeded peacefully until its final stretch, when violence broke out.
According to police, a group of protesters threw flares and Molotov cocktails at officers stationed near the Israeli embassy in Athens, prompting the use of tear gas and flash grenades to restore order.
The Hellenic Police (ELAS) confirmed that 20 people were initially detained, 18 of whom were later arrested.
Strong police forces had also been deployed outside the US Embassy earlier in the evening as the demonstrators passed by, though no incidents were reported there.
The protest was part of ongoing demonstrations in Greece expressing solidarity with Palestinians amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
