Christodoulides: Today addresses EU Parliament

Date:

Bilateral welcome and plenary speech

President Nikos Christodoulides arrives in Strasbourg today to present the Cyprus EU Presidency priorities to the EU Parliament plenary.

EU Parliament President Roberta Metsola hosts him at 10:00 local time (11:00 Cyprus time) for a bilateral meeting. Christodoulides then addresses the assembly on the six-month agenda, followed by a joint press conference with Metsola.

This key event underscores Cyprus’s leadership in steering EU policy during a period of heightened global challenges.

Guiding Slogan: “Autonomous Union. Open to World”

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letympiotis outlined yesterday that Christodoulides will highlight the Cyprus EU Presidency priorities under the banner “An Autonomous Union. Open to the World”.

The programme emphasises strengthening Europe’s strategic autonomy, resilience, and competitiveness. These efforts respond directly to an environment of escalating geopolitical pressures facing the continent.

Cyprus’s unique EU frontier role

Cyprus assumes this responsibility as the European Union’s southeasternmost member state. It remains the only EU capital under illegal occupation, positioning the island uniquely at the bloc’s edge.

Christodoulides will stress unwavering commitment to international law, sovereignty, and territorial integrity for all states. Recent European and global developments make this non-negotiable for the EU’s security, stability, and unity.

Firm stance mirrors Ukraine solidarity

This approach echoes the EU’s steadfast support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion and violations of international law. Such solidarity reflects Europe’s credibility and shared duty to uphold peace and global legality.

The Cyprus EU Presidency priorities build on this foundation, ensuring consistent defence of core European values.

Pivotal bridge to wider region

A major focus falls on Cyprus serving as a bridge between the EU and the broader Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Christodoulides advocates for a more active, cohesive, and strategic EU footprint in the region.

This presence fosters stability, peace, and enhanced regional cooperation, aligning with the presidency’s vision for an outward-looking Europe.
