President travels to Barcelona for landmark ceremony

President Nikos Christodoulides travels to Barcelona on Thursday to attend the inauguration of the Sagrada Familia, following an invitation from the Spanish government in his capacity as leader of the EU member state currently holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

According to a written statement by Government Spokesperson Victor Papadopoulos, the President will represent Cyprus at the ceremony, which is expected to bring together heads of state, government leaders and other senior officials.

Pope Leo to lead ceremony

Pope Leo will preside over the celebratory service at the Sagrada Familia and will officially bless the basilica’s new tower.

The inauguration coincides with the 100th anniversary of the death of architect and visionary Antoni Gaudí, whose unfinished masterpiece has become one of Spain’s most iconic landmarks.

Cultural programme continues on Friday

On Friday, President Christodoulides will attend the exhibition “Picasso and Cyprus: Encounters with the Ceramics of the Mediterranean” at the Picasso Museum in Barcelona.

The exhibition forms part of the cultural programme organised under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Following the event, the President is expected to return to Cyprus.
