President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman will hold another meeting on Thursday, September 17, their last scheduled meeting before the UN General Assembly in New York.
The Christodoulides-Erhürman meeting will take place at 11:00am as part of the leaders’ regular contacts and continued substantive discussions.
Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot negotiator Menelaos Menelaou is expected to meet Mehmet Dana, the Turkish Cypriot leader’s special representative, on Monday afternoon, according to information obtained by the Cyprus News Agency.
No update on Holguín’s UN contacts
There has been no further information so far regarding a planned telephone conversation between UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and his Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguín.
Holguín postponed her planned visit to Cyprus and subsequent trip to New York in recent days for health reasons.
UN General Assembly begins this week
The High-level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly begins at UN headquarters on September 18 and runs until September 28.
The General Debate, the main event during which heads of state and government address the Assembly, will begin on Tuesday, September 22.
Following their previous meeting on September 9, President Christodoulides said there could potentially be a joint meeting involving himself and Erhürman in New York, either with the UN Secretary-General or his Personal Envoy.
There has been no further information on such meetings so far, according to the Cyprus News Agency.
Discussions continue on three areas
At their previous meeting, the two leaders continued discussions on three areas: methodology, substance and confidence-building measures.
Christodoulides said there had been progress on some issues, in the sense that there was a common understanding, while disagreements and different approaches remained on others.
