Christodoulides Kyiv visit: EU presidency and Ukraine support

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides departs today for Kyiv for a working visit, held as part of preparations ahead of Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The trip also comes at a period of significant developments for Ukraine.

According to the presidency, the Christodoulides Kyiv visit reflects Cyprus’ firm political will to actively contribute to advancing European priorities and to express its steadfast support for Ukraine.

During his meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky, President Christodoulides will reaffirm the Republic of Cyprus’ full commitment to the principles of international law, as well as Cyprus’ absolute respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity — a position consistent with Cyprus’ own historical experience and long-standing principles, applicable in all cases without exception.

The discussions will also include the main priorities of Cyprus’ upcoming EU Presidency, which place the Ukrainian issue high on the European agenda. At the same time, the need to address the circumvention of sanctions decisively will be emphasised, along with ensuring the overall effectiveness of the international sanctions framework, which requires a common stance, transparency and consistency from all member states.

President Christodoulides will arrive in Kyiv on 4 December and, together with President Zelensky, will pay tribute to Ukrainians who died defending their country, laying a wreath at the “Wall of Heroes” memorial.

This will be followed by a private meeting between the two leaders and expanded talks at the Presidential Palace, focusing on EU–Ukraine relations, the country’s accession negotiations and the contribution of the upcoming Cypriot Presidency. The leaders will then make statements to the media before attending a working lunch.

Later, the President will visit the Ukrainian Parliament for a meeting with Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, confirming the strong institutional dimension of bilateral relations.

He will also visit the Special Rehabilitation Centre for children repatriated after abduction and captivity in occupied territories, highlighting the humanitarian focus of Cyprus’ stance on the war and its impact on the most vulnerable.

Before departing Kyiv, President Christodoulides will visit the Saint Sophia Cathedral, an emblematic monument of the country’s Orthodox tradition and cultural heritage.

The President will be accompanied by Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, Director of the Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis and senior officials. The delegation returns to Cyprus on 5 December.
