Christodoulides: Integrity will prevail over the crisis

Date:

The resignation of Presidential Office Director Mr Charalambos Charalambous is an act of confidence and trust, President Nikos Christodoulides stated today. He urged all state authorities to utilise every tool at their disposal for a full investigation into the matter, following the emergence of a video.

Speaking to journalists upon arriving at an event in Limassol, President Christodoulides was asked about the resignation. He said he would issue a written statement shortly after the event concluded.

Serious approach to the investigation

On the matter, which he approaches with utmost seriousness – neither downplaying nor underestimating it – the President called on all relevant state authorities to conduct a thorough probe.

He noted the significance of assistance from foreign states and the European Union itself.

Thoughts on abolishing the ISSB body

Regarding the Independent Social Support Body (ISSB), the President shared his initial thought: complete abolition. He mentioned ideas to transfer it to the State Scholarships Foundation, but noted critics would still accuse him, as he, the Government, and the Council of Ministers appoint its president.

Of course, the thousands of needy students who have benefited will not be left unsupported. The Government is processing tools to address this, enabled by responsible fiscal policy allowing investments in such challenges.

Message to political forces amid crisis

In moments of crisis, which this undoubtedly is, any leader with clean hands must remain calm, the President emphasised. He warned political forces that their reactions could impact the upcoming parliamentary elections in a few months.

He respects all parties, including coalition ones, as pillars of democracy; they are free to act as they wish. The Government remains accountable to the Cypriot people and its pre-election programme.

No pressure, readiness for transparency

Asked if Mr Charalambous’s resignation stemmed from pressure, President Christodoulides replied no, describing it as an act of confidence, not guilt.

On publishing the donor list, he affirmed no issue, ready to proceed per relevant legislation – open cards and, above all, clean hands.

Hybrid warfare warnings

Regarding prior Government warnings on hybrid warfare, he cited EU briefings during Cyprus’s presidency assumption. Competent services handle it, with no executive interference in ongoing probes.

He referred further hybrid warfare questions to those managing it, stressing full trust in Presidential communications when actions are beyond reproach.

No Government damage from the leaked video, he added, citing supportive messages from across parties. He stands publicly, unafraid.
