Christodoulides forecasts 20,000 visitors during EU Presidency

Date:

President Nikos Christodoulides said Wednesday that Cyprus anticipates around 20,000 visitors from EU member states and other countries during the six-month Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

He made the comments while greeting guests at the postcard exhibition “Journey through the EU, through the lens of time” at Larnaca Airport. Christodoulides congratulated Hermes Airports for organising the display, which features 250 selected postcards from the past century depicting Cyprus and the other 26 EU member states. The exhibits come from the collection of the late collector Antonis Hatzipanayis, curated by his son, journalist Panikos Hatzipanayis.

He noted that this is not the first such exhibition during a Cyprus EU Presidency. In 2012, a similar photo display from Cyprus took place at the House of Cyprus in Athens.

The President described the exhibition as “a truly virtual journey to the early 20th century, when almost everything was completely different from today. Back then, communication happened through letters, literally hand to hand.”

“Although this method of sending greetings and sharing memories is now, unfortunately, outdated, it still carries a unique charm that older generations should remember and younger ones should learn,” he added.

The display, organised in cooperation with Hermes Airports, serves as “a beautiful welcome for the thousands of visitors coming to Cyprus for the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union”.

Christodoulides also praised Hermes Airports for achieving record arrivals at both airports last year and this year, crediting the close cooperation with the government.
