Christodoulides discussed the Cyprus problem with Trump

Date:

The President of the Republic, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, stated that he discussed the Cyprus problem with the President of the United States yesterday, on the sidelines of the Summit on Gaza.

Speaking to journalists today, upon his arrival at the annual conference of the Legal Service Academy, and when asked about the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the Summit on Gaza, which took place yesterday in Egypt, the President said that although there were “some who did not want the Republic of Cyprus to be there, we were represented, having been invited by both the American President and the President of Egypt.”

He added:
“It is important that we were very specific, as we were in October 2023 in Paris, when we first presented the ‘Amalthea’ initiative — which, unfortunately, was initially questioned by some at home.

Similarly, yesterday we presented a specific plan, a design currently underway, consisting of six initiatives that the Republic of Cyprus can undertake in the fields of security, reconstruction, and humanitarian assistance, based on President Trump’s 20-point plan.

This proposal has also been discussed in recent days during phone conversations I had, particularly with the President of the European Commission. The document, which is still being developed, has been sent to the Commission, to the Member States, to the Americans, and to the interested parties. Now is the time to work towards implementing what has been agreed in the first stage of the Trump plan, so that we can move on to the second stage.

It is important, especially for us — as a country in the region, maintaining excellent relations with all neighbouring states, the only EU member state in the area, and one directly affected by developments — to do everything possible, always within our capabilities, to ensure that what has been agreed is implemented.”

When asked what was discussed between himself and President Trump yesterday, President Christodoulides said, “The only thing I can say is that the issue discussed was the Cyprus problem.”

Asked to comment on the fact that Simon Aykut, accused of usurping Greek Cypriot properties, admitted to a number of charges in court, the President of the Republic said, “I do not intervene in matters of the judiciary — I want to make that clear. Beyond that, the admission proves the correctness of our policy. It is a policy that was criticised not only by the occupying regime but also by some domestically. I repeat, the admission proves the correctness of the Government’s policy — a policy that should have been followed many years ago.”
