Christmas film by Cypriot screenwriter heads to Disney+

Date:

One of the best-loved Christmas stories has received a Greek adaptation, with the film Christmas Carols set to arrive on Disney+ during the 2026 festive season.

The Greek production, titled Ta Kalanta ton Christougennon (Christmas Carols), combines the emotion and magic of Christmas with timeless messages of love, generosity and compassion.

Inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic

The film draws inspiration from Charles Dickens’ iconic work A Christmas Carol, a story that has remained a cherished part of Christmas traditions for generations.

The Greek adaptation premiered in cinemas in Cyprus and Greece on 4 December 2025. Following its theatrical release, the film is preparing to make its streaming debut on Disney+ during the 2026 festive season.

Its arrival will bring a Greek take on the classic Christmas tale to audiences watching from home.

A cast led by Loris Loizidis

The film is directed by Christos Kanakis and written by Cypriot actor and screenwriter Loris Loizidis, who also stars in the leading role as Lykourgos. The cast includes well-known Greek actors Giannis Bezos, Orestis Chalkias and Youlika Skafida, alongside Konstantinos Danikas, Amalia Kavali and Dimitris Kapetanakos.

Loizidis’ involvement gives the production a notable Cypriot connection, placing a Cypriot creative at the centre of a new adaptation of one of the world’s most recognisable Christmas stories.

What is the film about?

The story follows Lykourgos, a wealthy but cold-hearted and miserly man who lives in isolation and refuses to help people in need. On Christmas Eve, three spirits visit him, taking him on a journey through his past, present and future.

Their revelations force him to confront his behaviour, recognise the suffering of others and consider the consequences of continuing along the same path. The experience challenges him to rediscover his humanity and embrace a life shaped by love, generosity and compassion.

Blending comedy, drama and fantasy, the film reimagines Dickens’ timeless tale for Greek-speaking audiences, while preserving its central message about kindness and the possibility of personal change.

Why the film matters to Cyprus

The film’s cinema release in Cyprus on 4 December 2025 gave local audiences the opportunity to experience the adaptation on the big screen. Its connection to Cyprus is particularly significant because Loris Loizidis, the film’s screenwriter and lead actor, is Cypriot.

His contribution highlights the role of Cypriot talent in Greek-language cinema and brings a local creative perspective to a story with international appeal. The planned Disney+ release could also introduce the production to a wider audience, including Cypriots living abroad.

By reinterpreting a familiar international classic through Greek-language storytelling, Christmas Carols offers a festive story that combines a well-known Christmas tradition with a cultural connection to Cyprus.
