The Cabinet on Wednesday approved a €1 million emergency package to help professional farmers cope with skyrocketing electricity bills caused by prolonged drought.
The Agriculture Ministry proposed the measure after three years of low-rainfall years drastically cut available irrigation water and forced growers to rely heavily on boreholes and pumps.
Farmers faced higher electricity use for irrigation, cooling and crop protection, pushing up production costs and squeezing incomes.
Key points of the aid:
- €1 million total fund
- Covers part of electricity consumption from July 2024 – August 2025
- Paid as de minimis aid to registered professional farmers (individuals, companies and cooperatives)
- Applies only to agricultural tariff code 011 accounts used exclusively for farming
- Payments processed directly by EAC through bill credits
The Ministry will calculate each beneficiary’s amount. EAC will credit the accounts using budget savings from the Agriculture Ministry.
The scheme aims to ease financial pressure, keep production costs manageable and safeguard the viability of Cypriot agriculture under continued drought conditions.
