China and US begin trade talks in South Korea

Delegations from the United States and China have begun economic and trade consultations in South Korea, according to the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

The US-China talks are taking place at Incheon airport near Seoul and are seen as a prelude to high-level meetings scheduled in Beijing between the leaders of the two countries.

High-level officials take part

Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent are both taking part in the discussions.

The meetings come ahead of the expected arrival of US President Donald Trump in China for further talks.

Trade tensions remain central issue

The consultations are expected to shape the agenda for the leaders’ meetings in Beijing, where trade relations between the world’s two largest economies will be a central focus.

The two countries have been engaged in a prolonged trade dispute throughout 2025, imposing tariffs and restrictions that have affected global markets.

A temporary truce reached in October between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping is expected to be reviewed during the current round of talks.
