French carrier strike group spotted south of Cyprus
The presence of the French naval strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle south of Cyprus has been confirmed through open-source intelligence (OSINT) and UAV tracking data. A French Navy Schiebel Camcopter S-100 drone, callsign UAV474, was detected operating over the sea south of Cyprus, indicating the wider carrier strike group’s operational area.
Multinational European naval force
The carrier is accompanied by a multinational European naval force including:
- ITS Federico Martinengo (F596) – an Italian Navy FREMM-class frigate with advanced anti-submarine and anti-air capabilities.
- ESPS Cristóbal Colón (F-105) – a Spanish Álvaro de Bazán-class frigate equipped with the Aegis combat system for extended air defence.
- HNLMS Evertsen (F805) – a Dutch De Zeven Provinciën-class air-defence frigate with advanced radar and aerial threat countermeasures.
Together, these vessels provide a strong protective perimeter around the Charles de Gaulle, significantly enhancing anti-air and missile defence capabilities.
Advanced missile shield in the Eastern Mediterranean
The deployment south of Cyprus aligns with rising tensions in the Middle East. Analysts suggest its purpose is to create a deterrent against potential ballistic missile, cruise missile, or drone attacks from Iran or allied networks.
The combination of Spanish and Dutch frigates’ detection and interception systems, alongside Rafale jets operating from Charles de Gaulle, forms a broad defensive “umbrella” in the Eastern Mediterranean. This configuration allows potential aerial threats to be neutralised before they reach Cypriot airspace or critical European strategic infrastructure.
European strategic presence
The coordinated operation of France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands under a unified command demonstrates European resolve to reinforce security along Europe’s southeastern flank. Analysts regard this carrier strike group deployment as one of the strongest European naval presences in the Eastern Mediterranean in recent years.
