The United States military announced late Saturday that it had shot down two Iranian attack drones which it said posed a threat to maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.
“U.S. forces (…) shot down two Iranian attack drones that threatened international navigation in the Strait of Hormuz,” the United States Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees military operations in the Middle East, said in a post on X.
“The U.S. military remains vigilant and prepared to continue defending against any attack from Iran,” the statement added.
On Friday night, CENTCOM announced that it had intercepted four Iranian attack drones heading towards the strategic waterway and later carried out strikes against coastal surveillance radar installations on Iranian territory.
In response, Iran said it launched a volley of missiles against what it described as “hostile” military facilities in Kuwait and Bahrain, two Gulf states that are among Washington’s regional allies.
The U.S. military said it intercepted six ballistic missiles, while a seventh failed to reach its target.
The developments come as Washington and Tehran continue indirect negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. However, there have been no clear indications of significant progress in the talks.
