President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides described the decision to grant voting rights at the age of 17 as a historic day for democracy in Cyprus. He noted that the Cabinet would approve the measure, allowing participation in electoral processes from the age of 17.
During the Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, the president highlighted the significance of implementing one of the government’s key priorities: strengthening participatory democracy. He stated that the decision to lower the voting age and introduce automatic registration on electoral rolls reflects trust in the country’s youth, encouraging them to actively participate in decision-making processes.
Christodoulides emphasised the government’s belief in the importance of involving young people in public affairs. He explained that initiatives such as technology-driven platforms have already been implemented to give young citizens a voice on issues concerning the state. He further mentioned the integration of citizenship education and skill development into school curricula from early childhood to prepare young people for active participation in electoral processes.
The president expressed hope that Parliament would respond promptly to ensure the implementation of the measure in time for the 2026 parliamentary elections. He added that this move aligns Cyprus with practices in other EU member states where 17-year-olds can vote.
Christodoulides acknowledged the leadership and contributions of young people in public discourse and reiterated the government’s trust in them. He stated that granting voting rights at 17 allows the younger generation to decide and elect those whose decisions shape their future.
Concluding, he described the initiative as a milestone for democracy in Cyprus and urged Parliament to take swift action to realise this important step.
