The Cabinet has approved a new bill titled “The Imaging Centres (Registration, Operation and Inspection) Law of 2025”, prepared by the Ministry of Health, aimed at regulating the operation of medical imaging facilities in Cyprus.
Speaking after Thursday’s Cabinet meeting, Health Minister Michalis Damianos said the goal is to ensure that imaging services—such as X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and nuclear medicine tests—are provided safely and to high quality standards, for the benefit of both patients and public interest.
The 2025 bill on imaging centres regulation introduces clear standards and requirements for licensing and operating all imaging centres. These include criteria related to infrastructure, staffing, and scientific oversight.
According to the Minister, the Ministry of Health will act as the supervising authority, responsible for the monitoring and inspection of these centres. A public registry of approved Imaging Care Centres will also be created and made accessible for public reference.
Each centre will be required to appoint both an operations manager and a scientific director to ensure that services are delivered in accordance with the prescribed standards and in the best interest of patient care.
The bill also includes provisions for routine inspections, penalties for violations, and a transitional framework allowing facilities time to comply with the new regulations.
Importantly, the legislation applies to all imaging service providers, whether or not they are part of the General Healthcare System (GHS).
The next step is for the bill to be submitted to the House of Representatives for discussion and approval, Damianos concluded.
