Businessman shot dead in Limassol – confusion over location of killing

Date:

Police in Limassol were placed on high alert on Friday morning following reports of gunfire near the Tsirio Stadium area. The victim was later identified as 49-year-old businessman Stavros Demosthenous, who was found dead from gunshot wounds inside his car.

Initial reports suggested that Demosthenous had been the target of a gang-style attack on the highway, with shots fired from a passing motorcycle while he was driving his luxury vehicle. Following the incident, the police temporarily closed the section of the highway between the Agia Fyla and Troodos roundabouts to allow forensic teams to investigate.

Shortly afterwards, a vehicle was found on fire nearby, though police said there was no immediate confirmation of any connection to the murder.

However, later information revealed a different version of events. According to new details emerging from Limassol, the fatal shooting is now believed to have occurred outside Demosthenous’ home.

Sources said the businessman was critically injured at the scene and was initially placed in his car by his son in an attempt to take him to hospital. During the desperate rush to get help, a traffic accident occurred, prompting a second vehicle to arrive and continue transporting the injured man to Limassol General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police have not yet issued an official statement confirming the exact sequence of events or the motive behind the killing. A formal briefing is expected later on Friday.

Authorities are continuing investigations into what appears to be a targeted murder, while forensic teams and investigators remain at both the scene of the shooting and the burned vehicle to gather evidence.

The case has shocked the Limassol business community and the public at large, as the 49-year-old was a well-known figure in local circles.
