Bus drivers, members of OMEPEGE–SEK and SEGDAMELIN–PEO, are staging a two-hour strike today, Friday, from 9:00 to 11:00am. During this period, the unions will hold a protest at Solomos Square in Nicosia.
Safety issues with traffic cameras
The unions said repeated interventions and warnings to the Transport Ministry regarding issues caused by the traffic camera system have so far produced no substantial solution. They emphasised the impact on professional bus drivers’ safety and working conditions.
Suggestions have been made to install warning systems for red traffic lights to prevent sudden braking, which poses serious safety risks for passengers.
Concerns over sudden bus stops
The unions highlighted that buses cannot stop abruptly due to their size and the presence of passengers, many of whom are seated without seat belts or standing. Sudden braking increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
The unions concluded by apologising for any inconvenience the strike may cause to the travelling public.
