A video sent by a SigmaLive reader has raised alarm after bulldozers were filmed operating on a beach in the Pervolia area of Larnaca, just metres away from known turtle nesting sites.
The footage shows bulldozers on Larnaca beach, where they appear to be carrying out earthworks or construction activities. The work is taking place in close proximity to turtle nests, a protected habitat under Cypriot and EU conservation law.
The incident has sparked concern among environmental activists and residents, who warn that such activity during the nesting season could destroy fragile nests or drive turtles away from the area altogether.
Although it is unclear whether the works were officially authorised or supervised by environmental authorities, the presence of bulldozers on Larnaca beach so near to turtle nests has prompted calls for immediate investigation and enforcement.
Sea turtle nesting areas, particularly in regions like Pervolia, are strictly regulated, and any disturbance can pose a serious threat to both hatchlings and the broader ecosystem.
