British man’s body missing from Nicosia General Hospital mortuary

Date:

A British man’s body has gone missing from the mortuary at Nicosia General Hospital, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding its disappearance. The incident comes as the mortuary at Paphos General Hospital remains out of operation.

According to a report by Phileleftheros, police had transferred the body from Paphos to Nicosia because the mortuary in Paphos was not operating.

Funeral home discovers body is missing

Two days ago, a representative of a funeral home in Paphos travelled to Nicosia General Hospital to collect the body and take it to the funeral home’s premises. The aim was to complete the necessary arrangements for its repatriation to the UK, in accordance with the wishes of the deceased man’s relatives.

However, upon arrival, the representative discovered that the body was not in the expected location. Initial checks did not establish that it had been officially transferred elsewhere.

The police were subsequently informed so they could investigate whether officers had moved the body without following the required procedures.

Police investigation launched

A report was initially filed at Latsia Police Station, which is responsible for Nicosia General Hospital. Given the seriousness of the case, the investigation was subsequently taken over by a department of Nicosia Police Division.

The circumstances surrounding the disappearance remain under investigation.

Mortuary closures create additional difficulties

According to Phileleftheros, the incident may be linked to the continued closure of mortuaries in Limassol, Paphos and other districts. The situation has forced police to transport bodies to Nicosia for the necessary procedures.

The transfers create additional logistical challenges for the handling and transportation of bodies.

The Paphos General Hospital mortuary has been out of operation following a malfunction involving its refrigeration units.
