Bishop Tychikos fears for his life, according to his lawyer Evangelia Poulla, who spoke on the “Protoselido” programme following reports of possible surveillance of the former Bishop of Paphos- and of herself- by a private vehicle. She added that relations between the Bishop and the Archbishop were never good.
Poulla said the alleged monitoring of Bishop Tychikos by private vehicles is not a new phenomenon, noting she had made statements about it in the past. “It was the same company, using specific vans, though not always the same vehicle,” she added.
“I was told that one of the vans came to a party in Stroumpi and got lost. The village has streets and numbers, it wasn’t logical. From one end of the village to the other, it’s like being in a different one. And this van just happened to lose its way and end up outside my house? It upset my parents and my niece, who was pregnant at the time,” she said, adding: “I don’t want to accuse anyone- I only have indications.”
Asked about the Bishop’s safety, Poulla said: “He hasn’t personally told me that his life is in danger. Because of his health, we don’t have frequent phone contact.”
She added that Bishop Tychikos had confided his fears to a spiritual follower, who later shared them with her, but said the matter “must be handled with sensitivity”.
Regarding the personal relationship between Bishop Tychikos and the Archbishop of Paphos, Poulla stated: “They never had a good relationship. Our Bishop suffered because of him. That’s why he went to study in England. The Archbishop always discouraged him.”
