A groundbreaking operation at the American Medical Center in Nicosia has given a 45-year-old motorcyclist a fully functional bionic arm, just over a year after a horrific crash left him with an above-elbow amputation.
On 28 November 2025, orthopaedic surgeon Dr Stelios Hajichristofi successfully implanted a BADAL-X press-fit titanium fixture directly into the patient’s humerus – Cyprus’ first osseointegrated upper-limb prosthesis.

Next steps
- Over the coming weeks the implant will fuse with the bone
- Gradual weight loading begins
- Final attachment of the myoelectric elbow, wrist and multi-articulated hand
- Full training on the new limb

The advanced prosthesis restores natural movement through muscle signals, offering grip, rotation and independent finger control.
The patient lost his left arm above the elbow in a motorcycle accident on 13 September 2024. Despite multiple injuries and ICU time, intensive rehab got him walking again within six months. Doctors selected him for the pioneering procedure because of his young age and excellent recovery.
The Ministry of Health approved the surgery. The prosthetic itself was custom-built by the Orthopaedic Applications Centre, which has trained the patient for the past three months.
Once fully operational, the bionic arm will restore significant independence and confidence to the 45-year-old.
