The Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued five visas for five Taliban representatives, enabling the delegation to participate in a meeting with European Commission officials in Brussels focused on migration, a ministry spokesperson confirmed on Monday.
The visas were issued on a restricted territorial and time basis, valid only for Belgium and for one day, the spokesperson said.
Security checks carried out
According to the Foreign Ministry, the decision followed assessments by Belgium’s State Security Service and military intelligence services, which concluded that the officials receiving the visas do not pose a threat to Belgium.
The issuance was therefore cleared under strict security conditions ahead of the visit.
Migration talks with EU officials
The Taliban delegation is expected to attend discussions with European Commission representatives on migration-related issues.
Officials declined to confirm the exact timing of the visit for security reasons, although sources indicated that the meeting is likely taking place on Tuesday.
Both Belgian authorities and the European Commission emphasised that details of the visit schedule would not be publicly disclosed.
Restricted and time-limited entry
Authorities underlined that the visas are strictly limited in scope, applying only to Belgian territory and valid for a single day, reflecting the controlled nature of the visit.
The decision comes amid ongoing international engagement on migration and humanitarian issues involving Afghanistan and the broader region.
