A deadly collision between a school bus and a train in Buggenhout has left four people dead, according to Belgian authorities.
The crash occurred on Tuesday morning at a level railway crossing in the Flemish region of Flanders.
Two teenagers among the victims
Belgium’s Transport Minister said the victims include two teenagers, the school bus driver and another adult.
Federal police spokesperson Anne Berger confirmed earlier that the school vehicle was carrying seven students, the driver and a female escort.
No passengers aboard the train were injured in the collision.
European leaders react to tragedy
Ursula von der Leyen expressed condolences following the tragedy, saying Europe mourns alongside Belgium.
“My heart breaks over the tragic accident,” she said, extending sympathies to the victims’ families and loved ones.
Investigation under way
Belgian authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Emergency services responded to the scene shortly after the collision, while rail and police officials are examining how the incident occurred at the crossing.
