Homes torched and families displaced after night of violence
Residents across Belfast are waking up uncertain whether it is safe to return to their homes after a night of widespread unrest that saw houses, cars, and a bus set on fire following Monday’s knife attack in north Belfast.
Despite repeated appeals for calm from political leaders and police, violence erupted across several areas of the city on Tuesday night, leaving communities facing a major clean-up operation and significant disruption.
Authorities had urged peaceful protest following the attack, but those calls went unheeded as masked groups targeted properties, forcing families to flee their homes.
“There’s people this morning who simply do not know if it’s going to be safe for them to return to their homes,” a BBC correspondent reported from Belfast on Wednesday morning.
Political leaders condemn violence
Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill strongly condemned the disorder, describing it as “outright thuggery”.
“Groups of masked men burning families out of their homes is nothing less than disgusting cowardice,” she said.
O’Neill warned that innocent people were being targeted in the aftermath of Monday’s attack and stressed that there could be no justification for racism, intimidation, or violence.
Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly also condemned the attacks, saying frustration over the knife incident should not be taken out on people who had no involvement.
Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn echoed those concerns, stating that the violence was “only damaging communities and putting innocent lives at risk”.
“There is no justification at all for this type of destruction and thuggery,” Benn said.
Claims of racially motivated attacks
Several politicians and community representatives described the unrest as racially motivated.
Claire Hanna, MP for Belfast South and Mid Down and leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP), told the BBC that Belfast was witnessing a “race-based pogrom”.
“We are seeing men going door to door asking to get the foreigners out based exclusively on the colour of their skin,” Hanna said.
In east Belfast, groups of around 100 masked men were reported to have moved through residential streets kicking in doors and breaking windows while declaring they were “getting the foreigners out”.
Pastor Jack McKee, who was assisting affected families in north Belfast, said homes belonging to black residents had been targeted.
“They’re good Christian people and they’re getting put out just because they’re black,” he said.
McKee said some victims had lived in the community for decades and warned that many displaced residents might not feel able to return.
Dozens of incidents attended by firefighters
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service described Tuesday night as exceptionally busy.
Firefighters dealt with 62 separate incidents between 19:00 and midnight, with most occurring in the Greater Belfast area.
Emergency crews responded to fires involving homes, vehicles, and public transport, while a family had to be rescued from a house fire near the location where a bus was set alight on Newtownards Road.
Disorder was also reported elsewhere in Northern Ireland, including Newtownabbey, Portadown, and Ballyclare, where vehicles, businesses, and police property were targeted.
Knife attack suspect due in court
The unrest followed a knife attack in north Belfast on Monday night in which a man in his 40s suffered serious injuries to his eyes, neck, and back.
A 30-year-old Sudanese man has been charged with attempted murder, possession of an article with blade or point in a public place, and threats to kill. He is due to appear before Belfast Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.
Police believe the suspect entered Northern Ireland via the Irish border in February 2023 after flying from Paris to Dublin. He subsequently claimed asylum and was granted leave to remain in the United Kingdom until 2028.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland has continued to appeal for calm, warning against further violence as investigations into both the knife attack and the overnight disorder continue.
