Bees at risk from dangerous mite in occupied areas

Date:

Cyprus Customs has warned of the risk of the Tropilaelaps mite entering and spreading in Cyprus, urging the public not to transport bees or beekeeping equipment from the occupied areas.

The warning follows indications that the mite, known as Tropilaelaps mercedesae, is present in an area of eastern Turkey. This has raised concerns that it could be brought into Cyprus through crossing points along the Green Line.

Why the Tropilaelaps mite threatens bees

The Tropilaelaps mite is considered a serious threat to beekeeping because of its rapid reproductive cycle. It can cause significant damage to bee brood and entire bee colonies.

Early detection of any movement of bees, queen bees or related beekeeping equipment is therefore considered crucial to limiting the risk. Customs has also stressed the importance of promptly informing the relevant authorities about any suspected movement.

Transport of bees from occupied areas prohibited

Cyprus Customs reminded the public that the Green Line Regulation prohibits the movement of animals and animal products across the Green Line. Any such items found during inspections are confiscated.

The department also highlighted the difficulty of preventing illegal transport because bees are very small and can be easily concealed.

It has called on the public to avoid attempting to transport bees or beekeeping equipment from the occupied areas to reduce the risk of the mite entering and spreading in Cyprus.
