Beach rapist caught by fingerprint clue in Lavrio

Date:

A man has been arrested for the rape of a woman on a beach in Lavrio, after forensic experts matched his fingerprint to a phone taken during the assault.

The victim reported the attack last week, telling police she had been enjoying a swim when she was suddenly assaulted, beaten, and raped by a stranger who then fled the scene. During the incident, she attempted to call for help on her mobile phone, but the attacker grabbed the device and ran.

Police later found the phone hidden among rocks near the beach and sent it for forensic testing. A single fingerprint found on the device led authorities to a man of Turkish origin, who holds Greek ID papers. He was already known to police for previous rape and robbery offences.

The beach rapist was caught on Monday, 30 June, and confessed to the crime after being brought in for questioning. He now faces charges of rape and robbery.

Greek authorities praised the victim for coming forward and credited forensic teams for helping ensure the beach rapist was caught swiftly.
