The Cyprus Banks Association has indirectly but clearly called on Parliament not to proceed with the proposed emergency tax on the banking sector during today’s plenary session, pledging to take specific measures to support society.
In a statement issued today ahead of the discussion on AKEL’s proposal for an emergency tax on banks, the Association expressed its strong willingness for collaboration, productive dialogue, and concrete steps to assist the economy and society.
In the brief statement, which can be seen as an appeal to Parliament to reject AKEL’s proposal, the Association stated that “the Cyprus Banks Association is closely monitoring the discussions and consultations taking place recently regarding the proposed law for the imposition of additional, emergency taxation.” It added that “the Association’s member banks are taking suggestions, proposals, and ideas regarding the sector’s role in specific areas very seriously and are committed to promptly examining and implementing specific measures.”
In light of the above, the Association reaffirmed its strong commitment to cooperation, productive dialogue, and, most importantly, concrete actions to benefit the economy and society. “The organisation’s member banks remain dedicated to the triptych of economic growth, financial stability, and social prosperity,” the statement concluded.
