Authorities have arrested a 26-year-old man of Azeri origin for photographing air and naval bases in Souda, Crete. Notably, a similar arrest of an Azeri national for terrorism was recently made in Cyprus.
The man, born in Azerbaijan and holding a Polish passport, had reportedly rented a hotel room very close to the air-naval base and was taking photographs of potential targets, including the Souda base itself and possibly warships entering and exiting the naval station.
His arrest followed intelligence gathered by the National Intelligence Service (EYP).
He is expected to appear before the Prosecutor today, facing charges of espionage.
According to sources from both the Hellenic Police and the EYP, the case is considered highly serious and falls within the broader context of heightened security measures following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East—particularly after the US strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities during the early hours of Saturday to Sunday.
It is widely acknowledged that Souda is one of the most strategically significant air-naval bases of the US military in the Mediterranean and could potentially become a target for extremist actions, should such decisions be made.
