Austrian Chancellor visits Cyprus to strengthen ties

Date:

Chancellor Stocker arrived on the island on Thursday evening and attended a private dinner with President Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace. This morning, he received an official welcome at the palace, including a military honour guard and the national anthems of Cyprus and Austria.

As part of the formal ceremony, Chancellor Stocker laid a wreath at the statue of Archbishop Makarios III. The two leaders then held a private meeting, during which President Christodoulides expressed his pleasure at welcoming the Chancellor so soon after his election just two months ago.

The Cypriot president noted the excellent relations between Cyprus and Austria, expressing a shared commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation—particularly in the areas of migration and security. He emphasised that both countries are EU members but not part of NATO.

He also highlighted that during extended talks, the delegations would exchange views on regional and international developments, and present the priorities of the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU.

President Christodoulides publicly thanked Austria for its longstanding contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) since 1964, noting that over 10,000 Austrians have served in the mission. He also expressed gratitude to Chancellor Stocker for Austria’s principled stance on the Cyprus issue.

Chancellor Stocker, in his remarks, echoed the sentiment of strong bilateral relations and confirmed Austria’s interest in further deepening cooperation, particularly in the fields of security, the economy, tourism, and education.

The meeting concluded with expanded talks between the official delegations of both countries.
