Safe relocation amid conflict
Australia has granted asylum to five members of the Iranian women’s soccer team who were visiting the country for a tournament when the Iran war began, officials confirmed on Tuesday. The players were moved from their hotel in Gold Coast to a secure location where they met with Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke to finalise humanitarian visas.
Decision followed international attention
The announcement came after pressure from Iranian groups in Australia and U.S. President Donald Trump, urging the Australian government to assist the players. The women had remained silent publicly regarding any asylum intentions. Burke described the moment as “joy and relief” for the players, highlighting that they are “not political activists.”
Iran reacts to asylum offers
Iranian state TV reported that the country’s football federation warned international soccer bodies about what it described as Trump’s “direct political interference,” raising concerns about potential impacts on the 2026 World Cup. Iranian officials, including First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, insisted the players would be safe returning home.
Emotional airport meetings
The final decisions were made during emotional meetings at Sydney Airport, where each woman had private discussions with officials and the opportunity to contact family members. Seven women initially accepted visas, but one later chose to return to Iran, underscoring the pressure and complex nature of their decisions.
Support for remaining players
The six women who remain in Australia were relocated to a new secure location. Officials confirmed they would receive permanent residency without legal hurdles, alongside full health, housing, and welfare support. Some members of the squad with connections to Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard were not offered visas.
International coverage and ongoing support
The Asian Football Confederation confirmed that the team had travelled from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur and pledged to provide full support to players and officials until onward travel is arranged.
