The Audit Office is currently examining complaints filed against suspended Paphos Mayor, Phedonas Phedonos.
Spokesperson Giota Michael confirmed that the office has received several complaints concerning the Municipality of Paphos. She said: “We are processing the content of the complaints and await instructions from the Auditor General on how to proceed.”
Michael added: “We confirm this is an issue we will investigate. At the moment, it is not clear when we will start, what exactly we will examine, or when we expect to finish. We are very careful, as we do not want to prejudice any of the individuals under review. We will investigate and proceed with the appropriate actions.”
Former auditor supports transparency efforts
Former Auditor General and Alma Movement leader, Odysseas Michaelides, praised the office’s approach, stating that it is fulfilling its duty by reviewing every relevant complaint.
He highlighted past actions, noting that in autumn 2023, he submitted a detailed report to the Police on financial and management matters related to complaints against the Paphos Mayor. “As of my dismissal in September 2024, we had not received updates on the outcome of those investigations,” Michaelides said.
He also referenced a special report issued in December 2022 concerning the allocation of 19 Turkish Cypriot professional premises to the Municipality of Paphos. The report responded to a complaint from a Parliamentary Committee member and included the Mayor’s replies to the Audit Office’s observations.

The Audit Office’s current review underlines a broader effort to ensure transparency and accountability in municipal governance, especially for officials under suspension.
