Athena Dimitriou’s lawyers claim targeting for Central Prisons case

Date:

Lawyers for Athena Dimitriou, former deputy director of Central Prisons, refer to “ulterior motives” regarding media reports on document leaks from the facility. Sotiris Argirou Law Firm states that selective leaks, public pre-trial incrimination, and bypassing procedural safeguards constitute direct violations of the presumption of innocence, right to a fair trial, and her constitutionally protected rights.

The statement notes it borders on the absurd that their client is publicly targeted for alleged document leaks at the exact moment those same documents leak and appear from an obviously different source.

Defense never received leaked material

“This material has never been made available to the defense, rendering related accusations not only unfounded but institutionally problematic,” the announcement adds.

During Dimitriou’s tenure, operations served as a model with no document leaks ever occurring. The firm questions how every document or incident at Central Prisons now connects to their client’s case, leaving no doubt it serves personal and/or other political motives.

Condemnation of leaking practices

The lawyers condemn such practices, which undermine not only their client’s rights but the rule of law and judicial process overall.

They express full confidence in the justice system and reserve the right to raise relevant pre-trial objections before the competent court. Dimitriu reserves all legal rights against any person affecting or violating these rights.

A follow-up statement reiterates that the leaks serve ulterior motives, with selective disclosure and pre-trial public blame attacking core legal principles.
