Police crack down on bonfires and firecrackers
Police carried out intensified patrols across Cyprus on Thursday night as part of ongoing efforts to prevent the use of firecrackers, illegal bonfires, and youth delinquency. The operations led to arrests involving three young individuals with firecrackers in Larnaca and Limassol.
According to an official statement, patrol units responded to multiple incidents involving fires and firecracker use in areas where young people had gathered. In several cases, the Fire Service was called in to extinguish active fire outbreaks.
Two 19-year-olds arrested in Larnaca
At around 9:45pm in Larnaca, police officers attended an open area where a group of youths had lit a fire and were setting off firecrackers. Upon seeing the officers, the group fled the scene.
Two 19-year-olds were intercepted. Police found a knife and four cylindrical firecrackers in the possession of one individual, while the second was carrying three cylindrical firecrackers. Both were arrested and detained to assist with ongoing investigations.
16-year-old arrested in Limassol incident
In Limassol, police officers conducting checks at a church yard encountered a group of young individuals. A 16-year-old allegedly insulted officers and attempted to flee but was subsequently arrested.
In a separate incident in the same district, a fire was discovered near a church and was extinguished by the Fire Service.
Incidents also reported in Nicosia
Police in Nicosia responded to two separate gatherings of youths who had lit fires and were using firecrackers. Firefighters intervened to bring both situations under control.
Police urge public cooperation
Authorities confirmed that increased police presence and targeted operations will continue across all districts. The public is urged to act responsibly and cooperate with authorities to prevent dangerous incidents linked to firecrackers and bonfires.
