Intensified searches across Central Prisons
Prisons security in Cyprus has been significantly strengthened over the past four months, with authorities seizing dozens of mobile phones, drugs and other prohibited items inside the Central Prisons.
The Ministry of Justice said intensified inspections have taken place both inside the facility and at visitor entry points since January 1, aiming to prevent the introduction of illegal items and ensure smooth prison operations.
Law changes introduce stricter penalties
Following a legislative amendment passed in February, the introduction, possession or attempted entry of mobile phones and other prohibited items inside prisons now constitutes a criminal offence.
The law applies to inmates, visitors and other individuals, while staff members face particularly strict penalties if involved.
Authorities stressed that any attempt to smuggle banned items will lead to prosecution and possible prison sentences.
Drone used in smuggling attempt
In a separate incident, prison authorities intercepted three mobile phones and three chargers following an attempt to smuggle them into the Central Prisons using a drone.
The incident occurred just 48 hours after the activation of a new anti-drone system.
According to officials, the drone entered the airspace above the facility at high altitude and dropped the items into the prison yard.
Anti-drone system detects activity
The prisons security system detected the drone immediately, recorded its flight path and captured operational data confirming the smuggling attempt.
Authorities said the system proved effective in preventing the illegal introduction of mobile phones, drugs and other contraband.
Items handed to police for investigation
The confiscated items were handed over to the Cyprus Police, which has launched an investigation using recorded data to identify those involved.
Officials said the incident highlights the importance of upgraded security measures and confirms efforts to strengthen protection within the prison system.
