Anna Aristotelous placed on leave amid investigation

Date:

Anna Aristotelous has been placed on leave following a decision by the Council of Ministers, amid an ongoing investigation into documents found at the home of the chief prison warden.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis confirmed the development after Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, citing public interest concerns and pending recommendations to the Public Service Commission (EDY). The issue stems from two police letters dated 18 and 25 June 2025, related to the case under investigation.

Letymbiotis stated: “The Council of Ministers, taking into account the content of the police correspondence and having been informed by the Minister of Defence about the duties exercised by Ms Aristotelous as Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Defence, has decided to recommend to the EDY the termination of her temporary appointment as of 25 June 2025.”

He added that, following this, the competent authority will submit a recommendation for Aristotelous to be formally placed on leave.

When asked by reporters, Letymbiotis confirmed that this leave will also affect Aristotelous’ duties as Head of Humanitarian Affairs.

The investigation relates to documents allegedly connected to her tenure as a senior official in the prison system, although no formal charges have been filed. The government has stressed the procedural nature of the leave, emphasising the need to safeguard public confidence.

When asked about Athena Dimitriou, who has also been mentioned in connection with related matters, Letymbiotis clarified that the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Audit Office.
