Scrutiny over taxpayer-funded security
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York, is under investigation over his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recent revelations suggest that police protection and UK government resources may have been used to facilitate Mountbatten-Windsor’s visits to Epstein. The former prince has denied any wrongdoing and claims he never witnessed or suspected Epstein’s criminal behaviour.
Gordon Brown demands police inquiry
Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has called for a police investigation into whether Mountbatten-Windsor used taxpayer-funded jets and RAF bases to visit Epstein. Brown sent letters to six police forces urging civil servants to be questioned about Mountbatten-Windsor’s decade-long tenure as a UK trade envoy, citing concerns over potential misuse of public funds.
Emails reveal police presence at Epstein residence
Emails released by the US Department of Justice show that London Metropolitan Police officers may have been deployed to provide security for Mountbatten-Windsor at a 2010 dinner at Epstein’s New York home. The correspondence details arrangements for protection officers to stay on the property, sparking outrage in Britain over potential misuse of police resources.
Police response and ongoing inquiries
The Metropolitan Police have stated they have not identified wrongdoing by protection officers but are contacting former and serving officers to assess information from the DOJ files. UK authorities are investigating whether airports in London, including Stansted, Luton, and Birmingham, were used to facilitate flights linked to Epstein’s alleged human trafficking.
International cooperation
The Met is working with US law enforcement and other UK police forces to assess the implications of the DOJ disclosures. At least seven British police forces are involved in inquiries, reviewing whether flights and security arrangements violated legal or ethical protocols.
