ALMA escalates political clash with ELAM

Date:

Movement accuses far-right party of systemic corruption

The ALMA movement intensified its public criticism of the far-right party ELAM, continuing a “paper war” over an ELAM candidate with a criminal past, according to ALMA. The movement also accused ELAM of ties to the mafia and of being part of the system that opposed Odysseas Michaelides.

ALMA’s statement

ALMA declared, “The myth of ELAM as a movement against corruption and the establishment ends. The far-right facade falls. ELAM serves as a stable support for President Christodoulides and the system, maintaining suspicious relations with illegal elements and the mafia.”

The movement emphasised that ELAM repeatedly shifts discussions from substantive issues to personal attacks, but ALMA refuses to engage in such tactics.

Key allegations by ALMA

  1. ELAM included a candidate with a criminal past for serious offences. ALMA stressed that formal legal rehabilitation does not remove political responsibility, and society has the right to judge politically.
  2. ELAM and its president maintain public connections with known mafia figures. Photos, events, and social interactions with such individuals are neither accidental nor innocent.
  3. ELAM’s president allegedly witnessed the counting of “black money” in the controversial Monastery of Avvakoum case. ALMA raised questions about the involvement of masked intruders.
  4. ELAM’s president reportedly served as a bodyguard for Nikos Michaloliakos, leader of the criminal neo-Nazi organisation Golden Dawn, and was politically shaped in a space convicted as criminal.
  5. Historical, political, and ideological links exist between ELAM and Golden Dawn. Past methods of ELAM leadership mirror paramilitary and underhanded practices.
  6. ELAM supported Annita Demetriou for the presidency of the House of Representatives.
  7. ELAM fully covered President Christodoulides regarding the “black donations” video scandal.
  8. ELAM’s electoral lists include former DISY members aligned with Christodoulides, confirming systemic political recycling of personnel and practices.
  9. ELAM remains a key pillar of the Christodoulides government and may support him in the first round of upcoming presidential elections.
  10. ELAM consistently defends the country’s most corrupt political establishment and never opposed the administration’s corruption under Anastasiades.

ALMA vs ELAM: principle and defiance

ALMA accused ELAM of seeking the dismissal and criminal prosecution of Michaelides to silence him. ALMA emphasised its commitment to democracy, refusing to equate formal legality with ethical conduct.

ELAM response

ELAM responded, accusing Michaelides of moralising while the Supreme Court had unanimously (8-0) ruled against him for misconduct. The statement called him “incorrigible and arrogant” and mocked minor financial claims he previously raised.
